Erté

Erté, Art Deco Muse

Romain de Tirtoff (November 23, 1892 – April 21, 1990) was a Russian-born French artist and designer known by the pseudonym Erté.  He was a diversely talented 20th-century artist and designer who flourished in an array of fields, including fashion, jewelry, costume design, graphic arts, stage composition and interior design.

Erté is perhaps most famous for his elegant fashion designs which capture the art deco period in which he worked. One of his earliest successes was designing apparel for the French dancer Gaby Deslys. His delicate figures and sophisticated, glamorous designs are instantly recognizable. His ideas and art continue to influence fashion into the 21st century. His costumes, program designs and sets were featured in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1923, productions of the Folies Bergère and George White's Scandals. On Broadway, the celebrated French songbird Irène Bordoni wore Erté's designs.

Erté continued working throughout his life, designing revues, ballets and operas. He had a major rejuvenation during the 1960s with the Art Deco revival. He branched out into the realm of limited edition prints, bronzes and wearable art.

We are proud to offer an exclusive collaboration between Erté and Deepa Gurnani.  Each piece is inspired by Erté's delicate and glamorous art deco look.   All Erté styles are hand embroidered using Deepa Gurnani's finest techniques, becoming timeless pieces.
